The UK doesn’t have problem with net zero ambition, it has a problem with delivery

The renewable energy sector in the United Kingdom is moving into a phase where ambition alone will no longer carry projects over the line. It could be argued the UK has led the renewable commitment globally but in recent year a different challenge has presented itself.

The long-term direction is clear, net zero, energy security, and electrification continue to shape investment and policy. Yet on live projects across the market, delivery is becoming the defining challenge. Rising capital costs, grid constraints, supply-chain pressure, and planning complexity are no longer future risks; they are immediate realities.

At Syzygy, we see this as a pivotal moment for both the industry and the advisory community. As projects grow in scale and complexity, there is a clear need to move beyond high-level strategy and towards hands-on, delivery-led support that connects ambition with execution.

That shift means:

  • Earlier involvement in project development

  • Closer integration of technical, commercial, and delivery thinking

  • Proactive identification and management of risk

  • Better engagement and communication between land/real estate owners and occupiers

  • A sharper focus on build, timelines, and outcomes

  • Asset management strategies that focus on maintaining yield and infrastructure

In the next phase of the energy transition, competitive advantage won’t come from having the boldest targets,it will come from the ability to consistently deliver. Consultancies have an important role to play in enabling that transition, not just by advising, but by actively supporting projects from development through delivery.

At Syzygy we are already experiencing that shift in what the sector needs, with demand for project delivery and asset management equalling the need for pure consultancy. That shows there is a recognition that the whole sector needs to move from simply talking a great game.

We’re keen to exchange views with developers, investors, and policymakers on how the sector can better align around delivery and unlock the next wave of renewable capacity. If this resonates, we’d welcome the conversation.
