After 14 years of managing onsite renewable-energy installations, Syzygy has earned a reputation as one of the UK’s most trusted names in solar PV asset management.
While we’ve long been known for development and project management of new systems, a growing share of our work now focuses on legacy installations - solar PV assets that clients have acquired, inherited, or developed independently of Syzygy. Ensuring these systems perform safely, efficiently and profitably over the long term has become an increasingly valuable part of what we do.
The Evolution of a Market
When we launched our Asset Management service in 2010, onsite solar was still emerging as a viable technology for commercial real estate. Today, the market is mature - with thousands of rooftop and ground-mounted systems operating across the UK and Europe - yet many still lack consistent, expert long-term management. That’s where Syzygy adds value. We onboard and optimise existing installations for clients across every real-estate sector - from logistics and retail destinations to multi-let industrial estates.
Across the UK, thousands of commercial buildings now host solar PV systems, many of which were originally installed to meet planning or sustainability obligations. When we’ve reviewed these, it’s not uncommon to find systems that have never been switched on, were installed without a valid grid-connection agreement, or have fallen into disrepair through lack of maintenance. Beyond lost generation and revenue, these issues can create serious compliance and insurance risks.
Every system we take on that hasn’t previously been managed by Syzygy undergoes a comprehensive technical and operational health check as part of our onboarding process. This involves verifying that all systems are safe, compliant and connected correctly, restoring metering and inverter communications, re-establishing data flows, tightening up commercial reporting, and confirming that all decarbonisation data is being accurately captured before the asset enters live management.
We follow a clear, structured onboarding process to bring every legacy system under active management:
1. Documentation review and system health check – we begin by reviewing all available design, commissioning and performance documentation, followed by a comprehensive technical and operational survey. This includes verifying compliance with Ofgem registration requirements, insurer expectations, and relevant technical standards.
2. Health Check Report – we issue a detailed report summarising findings and setting out a costed schedule of remedial works needed to restore the system to optimal performance and compliance.
3. Remedial works – these are managed and overseen by Syzygy to ensure that all corrective actions are completed safely, efficiently and to the required standard.
4. Onboarding to pvlab® – once works are complete, the system is fully integrated into our pvlab® asset-management platform, enabling live monitoring, reporting and ongoing governance. This process ensures that every system we take on - however old or complex - is technically sound, compliant and ready to perform, with a verified baseline from which long-term performance can be managed.
Why Active Management Matters
For developers, investors, asset managers and occupiers alike, active solar management is about more than ticking compliance boxes - it’s about protecting investment value and ensuring every kilowatt counts.• Optimise generation: maximise output through continuous monitoring, early fault detection and performance analysis.
• Protect long-term value: verified data supports valuations, insurance and refinancing.
• Extend system life: proactive maintenance safeguards warranties and prevents degradation.
• Reduce downtime and costs: early intervention stops small faults from becoming expensive failures.
• Maintain safety and compliance: structured governance reduces operational and reputational risk.Active asset management turns a solar PV system from a static installation into a resilient, revenue-generating asset for decades to come.
A Full-Lifecycle Partner
Our Asset Management capability complements Syzygy’s broader end-to-end service model:1. Scoping, feasibility and business case
2. Project development - taking projects from concept to tender readiness
3. Delivery - technical specification, procurement and construction management
4. Asset management long-term technical, commercial and compliance oversightThis continuity allows clients to work with one trusted partner from initial opportunity through to operation - and equally, it enables us to step in and support existing or legacy installations needing expert management.
How We Manage Existing Systems
Using our proprietary pvlab® platform, we integrate the technical, commercial and compliance layers of each asset into a single management environment - regardless of who originally installed it.Our service includes:
• Performance monitoring and fault management
• Revenue assurance (occupier billing, PPAs, subsidies, export)
• Technical and commercial reporting
• Governance and compliance (warranty, insurance, Ofgem, ESG data)
• Data and insights to support valuation and ESG reportingThe result: higher generation, lower downtime, and a transparent, auditable record of performance and compliance.
A Quiet Differentiator
The renewable-energy and commercial real-estate sectors have many capable designers, installers and O&M providers - but few offer independent, consultancy-grade asset management for existing systems. It’s a distinctive capability that fills a genuine gap in the market, particularly for landlords, funds and investors managing large, diverse portfolios.By combining technical expertise with commercial understanding, Syzygy ensures that every solar PV installation - new or legacy - continues to deliver sustainable value year after year. Our portfolio now exceeds 37 MWp of installed solar capacity across the UK and Europe, encompassing both new assets and legacy installations revitalised through our onboarding process.
“We’ve been managing legacy systems for years,” says Toby Hallifax, Head of Asset Management. “As more clients acquire renewable-energy assets, it’s clear how much confidence it gives them to know Syzygy is overseeing performance, compliance and commercial delivery.”
